THE AMERICA THAT ONCE WAS

One of our former presidents said, "If we ever forget that we're one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under." The Bible puts it this way in Psalm 9:17: “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” Psalm 44:1-3 gives us the sad words of a generation whose parents forgot God; forgot to factor God into the choices they made and saw their nation and their children’s’ future “fundamentally transformed—“fundamentally transformed to the extent that the country their parents and grandparents knew became only a story to which they could listen.

We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in

their days, in the times of old.

How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou

didst afflict the people, and cast them out.

For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm

save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because

thou hadst a favour unto them”—Ps. 44:1-3

What story will parents and grandparents have to tell to tell to their posterity in the future? Will it be a story about a place where people were free to pursue and enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; a place where freedom of speech, freedom to worship, free and fair elections, law and order, public decency, and private property ownership were commonplace; a nation that was founded upon Judaeo-Christian principles that ordered private and public life for over half of its history and was highly favored of God as long as they did this?

Will the story our children hear some day be a tragedy about an America that once was, but forgot God and watched our nation, fall to wicked tyrants.
