WHEN MASCULINITY IS MISSING
“Because there is very little honor left in American life, there is a certain built-in tendency to destroy masculinity in American men.” Ironically, this was written by Norman Mailer, who, in many ways, but not in every way, was himself, a man of “very little honor.” But, as they say, “Even a broken clock is right twice a day.”
Mailer was right. Honor in American life has been steadily decreasing for a long time as an effort to destroy masculinity men has steadily and rapidly increased in these modern times. The process involved in the “feminization of men” has been evident in America in very subtle, to over-the-top, flamboyant, in-your-face ways, for for many decades. The degree to which this process has been successful is obvious now, when men actually are thought of and think of themselves, socially and in a scientific sense (“Science falsely so called,” 1 Tim. 6:20), as being no different than women. The Bible reveals and history shows, that a society is in the last stages of degeneration and death when the men in it cease to have any honor for or among themselves in terms of their own gender and masculinity (Rom. 1:24).
Educator and author, Waller R. Newell was also correct when he said this about masculinity: "We don’t need to reinvent manliness. We only need to will ourselves to wake up from the bad dream of the last few generations and reclaim it, in order to extend and enrich that tradition under the formidable demands of the present." I am grateful to God for the many manly, masculine men who are left in America; men with some measure of honor, courage and a sense of responsibility—especially those who are God-fearing and Christian men. But I am sadly convinced that these may constitute the minority, not the majority of America’s male population today. We desperately need, at this hour, a reclamation of masculinity . in America.
Only a miraculous intervention by the God of heaven and earth can change the situation now existing regarding masculinity in America. But this can and will only happen if people will “wake up” and meet the conditions God has outlined to bring about His intervention: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chron. 7:14).
